The Dandy Boys
Large metal sculptures of two young 1960's men, with metallic silver coloured head and hands, striking a pose in metallic blue jackets and black shades
The Dandy boys, with their silver heads, quiff hair and electric blue jackets, are a gentle satire of groups of fisherman in the sixties who had their own uniquely flamboyant style for nights out in port. Earning a good weekly wage, they could afford to dress up when they were off the boats. The Lowestoft Journal reported: “I remember suits of red, bright yellow, lime green, tartan and one lad was said to have had one made out of curtain material … imagine the colourful scene when these ’48 hour millionaires’ got together.” The dandy boys paraded the ports, a fiercely independent statement of identity, indifferent to the mainstream fashion of the day.
