Brigadier
A humorous sculpture of a soldier in full military uniform, on horseback, his sword in the air, as his cartoon horse rears, one hoof on the ground
The Brigadier, sword aloft, leads the way 'once more into the breach' with both determination and panache. He has all the military swagger and theatrical poise of his inspiration, Napoleon from Jacques Louis David's famous painting but this 'Brigadier' is a comedy hero with sheer cheek to see him through. The composition balances on a single horse's hoof, a tangle of calvary boots, horse legs, stirrups, sword, scabbard, tail, main and moustache that generate a swashbuckling energy. Fuelled by a thousand imaginary childhood battle scenes, the Brigadier sculpture cuts a dash as he careers through the chaos, unfortunately this caricature of conflict still resonates today.
