52º North
Large metal sculpture of Pegasus, a horse with wings on which are written places around the globe with the same latitude of 52º North
52º North Pegasus was commissioned by Persimmon Homes in 2013 and is in the Latitude Development at Dunwich Close in Ravenswood in Ipswich.
Winner of The Ipswich Society Award 2013, this public sculpture is on the site of an old airfield and so was inspired by the idea that the winged horse Pegasus, having flown in a line of latitude around the globe lands back in Ipswich. He is a natural looking horse despite his wings. Inscribed in metal letters on each wing are the places he has visited along this single line of latitude, a telling mixture of familiar and distant - on one side Ipswich, Amsterdam and Berlin all relatively temperate climates compared to those not warmed by our north Atlantic drift, like Lipetsk in Russia or Saskatoon in Canada on the other. A reminder we are all on the same single planet.
