Major Convenience

Sited on top of a toilet block in Ipswich town centre, this cartoon style sculpture of a major, decorated with medals is about to swat a large metal fly

The major of Major’s Corner in Ipswich, commissioned by Ipswich Borough Council in 2005, is a moustachioed character with a chest full of medals, painted a bronze colour. One arm raised with a fly swat rather than a sword, he is at the edge of the parapet about to swat a giant metal fly. His battle days are behind him but from this vantage point at the top of the council toilet block, he has become a local landmark of his own.
