"celebrating the cycle of birth and rebirth"

Garden Steel Sculptures is run by Paul and Catherine Richardson. Both experienced artists, they have been designing and creating artwork together from their workshop in Suffolk for over 25 years. The countryside around them is the inspiration for this collection of garden sculptures.

Well known for his public art commissions around Britain, Paul Richardson's more recent and intricate garden sculptures are a wonderful new departure. Made in steel these sculptures look deep into the building blocks of nature: a seed, a leaf, the latticework of stems and vessels carrying food and water. They celebrate the cycle of birth and rebirth, often highlighting the beauty of decay.

The collection focuses on work that complements the scale and natural forms of the garden. There is a distinctive mix of traditional hand drawn, hand crafted process, with fresh contemporary design.

The sculpture can be seen on stands at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival where it was winner of the Best Tradestand Award 2021. The collection can also be viewed by appointment at the sculpture garden in Suffolk.

Many of the steel sculptures are coated with a protective layer of zinc to prevent the steel from rusting. Once outdoors, the zinc is exposed to air and moisture and the outer layer is given up to a delicate, chalky-grey patina. Some works, like the Calligraphy Ball, can have an additional powdercoat finish. A piece like the Filigree Firebasket is left uncoated, to oxidise to a natural 'rust' finish. All are wonderfully low maintenance works of art for the garden.
